THEWLISS DEMANDS AN END TO THE BENEFITS CAP 12/04/202304/10/2022 by Alison Thewliss SNP: SCRAP THE BENEFITS CAP TO HELP THE MOST VULNERABLE The SNP’s Shadow Chancellor has demanded that the UK Government must scrap its cruel benefits cap to provide support during the cost-of-living crisis. A ‘fiscal event’ took place last Friday, with announcements expected from the new Chancellor to tackle the cost-of-living crisis. Alison Thewliss, the SNP’s Shadow Chancellor, has called on the Government to use their powers to help the most vulnerable in society. Commenting, the SNP’s Shadow Chancellor Alison Thewliss MP said: “This UK Tory Government must take the opportunity to right some of the wrongs of their previous administrations. “Let’s not forget that Liz Truss sat round Johnson’s Cabinet table and backed every decision that led to the growing Tory-made cost-of-living crisis. This statement provides the ideal chance forher to take a new tack and make a difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable. “The benefit cap is due to cost families up to £65 a week from April onwards. This, and other dreadful George Osborne policies like the two-child limit to Universal Credit and Tax Credits, are set to be catastrophic for households as we move deeper into a recession and energy crisis. Kwasi Kwarteng is the fifth Chancellor since George Osborne – scrapping his cruel, poverty-inducing policies is long overdue. “Relative child poverty is set to reach its highest level since the 90s. Liz Truss must show initiative and scrap the two-child limit and benefit cap before any more harm is done. “Without action, the misery and hardship we are seeing now will grow exponentially.”
